Don't look irrelephant at the Zoo
Allie and I recently visited the Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington, IL. (Read about our adventures here). If anyone knows me, they know that I am a sucker for a good zoo! Animals are my absolute favorite and I always grew up dreaming of becoming a Marine Biologist. Instead, I interned for the Indianapolis zoo in the communications department since science isn't my strong suit. That's besides the point. Every day at work, I would see people walking around the zoo in the most uncomfortable clothing. Honestly, comfort is key, especially when you're going to be walking around in the heat all afternoon.
While we said hello to all our furry friends, several zoo-goers complimented the outfits we were wearing. Both Allie and I opted for casual skirts and dresses so we could get the occasional breeze and stay cool. However, perhaps the most important "zoo necessity" would be comfortable walking shoes. Allie got her sensible Tom/Van-like shoes at Rue 21 for a bargain. Meanwhile, my choice of shoes were these tan sandals from UOI. Unlike most sandals that start to pinch and hurt as the day continues, these are very comfortable to walk in, cute, and not to mention Allie's. ;)
As far as accessories, I always go for simple. How unfortunate would it be if you lost your favorite earring or ring while walking around a zoo? You'd never find it. Plus, from experience, I know visitors can drop things in the exhibits and that scares me away from wearing any heavy jewelry. We have
to keep those precious guys safe! I always settle for little to no jewelry, other than sunglasses. Allie found a hat which was perfect for the sunny day at Target. Her clothing choice was inspired by a fellow blogger Erin Howard (Check out her fashion blog).
My outfit was a mixture of pieces that I already owned. My suede skirt was extremely comfortable to walk in and my shirt was lightweight which is all I can really ask for. And because I felt artsy in this combination, I had to throw my blogging glasses on for a couple of pictures. These cute shades don't often see the light of day. I typically wear them when I know I am going to be sitting in front of my computer for hours sporting a messy bun and pajamas. But I am glad I could share them with you! (You can find them at Francesca's!)
Allie's outfit was another renedition of light, comfy, and breezy. Whether she was riding the merry-go-round with toddlers, petting tortoises or chasing baby goats around, this outfit had the flexibility to not limit her zoo activities. She also dressed up her look with a tie-around jean button-up. Flannels also are extremely cute to tie around for more solid colored dresses. I thought she looked adorable and comfortable!
Zoos are incredibly fun places to spend the day, and it is important to always dress comfortable and make sure you can move around in your outfits. Some people are satisfied wearing athletic shorts and a tank to the zoo, but if you can dress it up and be cute AND comfortable, why wouldn't you? The best part was these zoo-friendly outfits didn't break the budget. See more details below!
