The Girl on The Train: a book review

It’s time! One of my favorite books of 2016 has been turned into a movie. You may have heard of it, it’s a book called “The Girl on The Train” and it hit theaters today! And, you better believe I was one of the first ones to see it.

This psychological thriller was everything I could have hoped for and more, both on screen and on paper. The book and the movie are so similar, in fact the biggest difference in the location of the movie. Instead of Europe, it takes place in New York. Other than that I am amazed at how well the book transferred over in film edition. But enough about the movie! I always say “the book is better than the movie” and I will stick to that motto until I am proven otherwise.

The biggest thing I learned in this novel is that not one character can be trusted. That, and Paula Hawkins sure knows how to stump her readers. The book started off a bit slower for me and I wasn’t immediately hooked to the plot. But event after event started to occur and then I could not put the book down. It was creepy, sinister and most of all mind-blowing! How? What? WHO did that? All the questions and all the feels are thrown your way throughout this book.

The story is told by three different narrators. Rachel, a depressed alcoholic who rides the train every day creating storylines for people she passes and drunk dialing her ex-husband Tom. Anna, Tom’s new wife who gave Tom a baby, something Rachel could never give him. And, last but not least “Jess” who is later revealed as Megan, a younger woman who doesn’t like to settle and has a dark past that may catch up to her.

Rachel is the epitome of the girl on the train. She takes her mind off her own life by imagining the lives of others. Mostly "Jess and Jason’s" lives, seeing as she can watch them from the window because the train stops at that point each morning. But then one morning, things are not as they are supposed to be and Rachel sees something that completely shatters the "Jess and Jason" image she made up in her head.

To Rachel, ‘Jess’ is supposed to have the perfect relationship, home and life. But Megan is far from perfect and her life slowly starts to uncoil as Rachel helplessly watches from the train’s window. When Megan goes missing, Rachel may be the only one who can help solve the case.

This book is full of secrets and will grip your attention at each turn of a page. It will have you questioning what truly goes on behind closed doors and how well you can really know a person. No one is the good guy in Hawkins novel! No one.

Whether you choose to read the book (which I highly advise) or sit down and watch the book come to life on screen, you will not regret it. This is bound to be one of the best novels and movie renditions of 2016! Click the link here to purchase the book! And remember, this creepy movie is in theaters NOW! Do yourself a favor and go see it.
